Fellowship in Medical Education

See full syllabus here!

Goals: Given the pervasive climate of change in the continuum of medical education, it is important to have faculty members prepared to take on leadership roles in curriculum planning, evaluation, and educational change. While many faculty members have taken on these roles without special preparation, the Fellowship in Medical Education is intended to enrich the body of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that such faculty bring to bear in making informed educational decisions. The goal of this fellowship is to develop medical educators who lead, create, teach, and evaluate educational initiatives. We will provide an introduction to current theories or learning, review recent innovations in medical education, and support the development skills essential to improving and evaluating educational practices.

Over the two years, participants will develop curriculum and/or instruction using best practices AND design and conduct a program evaluation or education research study appropriate for publication in academic journals or presentation at professional meetings.

Objectives: After completing the fellowship, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply leadership skills to promote, influence, and sustain educational change.
  2. Apply general principles of learning drawn from theoretical perspective such as cognitive psychology, social constructivism, and motivation to the analysis of teaching and learning situations in medicine.
  3. Develop curriculum and/or instruction that reflect systematic attention to learner needs, program goals, learning objectives, selection of instructional activities, evaluation, and feedback
  4. Design and conduct a program evaluation or basic educational study appropriate for publication in academic journals or presentation at professional meetings.
  5. Engage in reflective practice for educational improvement and professional development
