Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use the Dell Med logo, or my department/unit logo?

Use the Dell Med logo by default.

Dell Med competes with other national brands such as Stanford University and University of California, San Francisco. Dell Med contains departments, centers, divisions, etc. You can think of those groups as sub-brands contained within the larger Dell Med brand. Each sub-brand is vital to the school's success.

However, each sub-brand isn't competing as a national brand on its own. Promoting each sub-brand as a national brand would be expensive. Instead, sub-brands use the Dell Med brand when communicating to the public. Doing so leverages the time and resources that Dell Med, UT Austin and UT System invest.

There may be times where use of a departmental logo is appropriate: When you're communicating to specific, small or internal audiences, for example.

What if I need to co-brand with another unit across campus?

When representing two or more UT Austin units, individual logos for the units are replaced by the university's formal logo and the units are listed in alphabetical order. Review the co-branding guidelines »

Co-Sponsored Units

If an organizational connection between two units exists, such as is the case with a co-sponsored center or institute, and a co-branded logo provided by University Communications exists, that logo may be used.

One example is the logo for the Value Institute for Health and Care, which includes both Dell Med and the McCombs School of Business.

Can I use the Dell Med logo for my student organization?

Only if the student organization is sponsored. Additional information is available including examples of proper use on the Trademarks & Licensing Use Restrictions page.

There are two types of student groups: registered and sponsored. Each has a different set level of affiliation with the university. Below is a brief summary of each, and you can read more on the Office of the Dean of Students webpage.

Registered

Registered groups/organizations CANNOT use The University of Texas at Austin, an abbreviation of the name or any of its trademarks or logos in its name. However, a registered student organization may use words such as "campus," "university," "Texas chapter" or "Austin" as part of its name.

Sponsored

Sponsored student organizations are official extensions of the university and may use protected university logos and marks in accordance with the guidelines for each mark. Sponsored student organizations must coordinate with their sponsoring administrative or academic unit to submit their design through the Internal Campus Request Portal to receive approval from the Office of Brand, Trademarks and Licensing.

Note: Groups without prior written approval may not use trademarks of The University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, all products must be produced by licensed vendors that are authorized, pursuant to license agreement, to use UT Austin trademarks.
