Exposure to Blood or Bodily Fluids

Steps to take if ever accidentally exposed to needstick, blood, or other bodily fluids.

  1. Gently wash with soap and warm water or irrigate mucous membranes.
  2. Notify supervising physician and/or charge nurse. Obtain source patient name and record number, if possible.
  3. Obtain initial medical attention and assessment as soon as possible, ideally within an hour.
    1. If at an Ascension facility:
      1. Call 512-324-4878
      2. Complete an incident report (or ask staff nurse to complete) in the Ascension Event Reporting System.
      3. Report to an Ascension ER. Do not provide your health insurance information. (The Ascension ER and all other service providers should bill NAHGA direct and email the submit the medical claim form and invoices.
      4. Complete this claim form Coverage Summary VOLUNTEER AXIS Nagha Claim Form. The first blank is Policy Number, leave that blank. The organization name should be Ascension. Complete the rest of the form EXCEPT for your personal health insurance.)
      5. Submit by email to Claims@nahga.com and copy volunteerclaims@ascension.org mailbox to file the Medical Claim.
    2. If not at an Ascension facility:
      1. Report to your clinical supervisor and clinic site management.
      2. Go to the University Health Service Office during business hours, or to the nearest emergency room.
      3. In these instances, you should provide your health insurance information.
      4. When you receive a bill, give that to Casey Ritter in Student Affairs who will process a reimbursement for the expense.

4. Follow medical recommendations for any follow up care.
5. Report to 512-471-3511 (UT environmental Health Services)


    Should you be exposed at an Ascension facility and still receive a bill:

    1. Complete this claim form 22-23 Coverage Summary VOLUNTEER AXIS Nagha Claim Form with Instructions. (The first blank is Policy Number, leave that blank. The organization name should be Ascension. Complete the rest of the form EXCEPT for your personal health insurance.)
    2. Submit the completed form and a copy of the bill by email to Claims@nahga.com and copy volunteerclaims@ascension.org mailbox to file the Medical Claim.
    3. Notify Casey Ritter in Student Affairs, to help navigate with the Seton Administration to get it resolved.
