In Conversation Discussion Series

The 'In Conversation' series is a monthly, virtual, discussion panel providing faculty with the opportunity to engage with Dell Med faculty leaders on topics at the intersection of professional skill development and career planning in academic medicine. Discussion topics for AY25-26 include 'Academic Career Exploration and Planning' sessions with 'pillar' mission- research, clinical expertise, and education- leaders sharing insights to support faculty as they build a career trajectory that aligns with their values in academic medicine.

Discussion sessions are designed to provoke discussion and open dialogue. Participants are encouraged to bring questions to each session.

Academic Career Exploration and Planning: A Discussion Panel with Dell Med Department Chairs

Dell Med leaders share pearls of wisdom & lessons learned from their experience building a fruitful career in academic medicine. In discussion with the session facilitator and faculty participants, leaders may explore topics including:

  • Their career trajectory and pearls of wisdom from their professional journey
  • Tips and insights on how faculty can grow their network and leverage opportunities in their communities -on campus, in the local region/state, professional societies, and beyond- to advance their professional goals?
  • How have professional mentors, sponsors, and/or peer groups helped you to consider new organizational leadership opportunities on the way to your current role?
  • What are some important considerations you would like to share with faculty contemplating team leadership or administrative leadership roles at Dell Med?
  • Recommendations for meaningful service and development opportunities available to faculty at various stages of their career (including resources at Dell Med, UT Austin, professional societies, local specialty organizations or associations, etc.).

Demystifying Quality Improvement: The Why, What, and How of QI

The panel discussion will focus on the basics of conducting quality improvement projects. This workshop is meant for all those who are interested in participating in quality improvement projects- from the beginner to the more experienced. Session panelists from different departments will explore:

  • Key insights for the various phases of a QI project, from Innovation, pilot testing, and implementation, to sustainability and spread;
  • Publication considerations and opportunities for professional collaboration; and
  • Resources that may help faculty interested in developing a QI project at Dell Med.

Getting Started: Ideation to Commercialization

Leaders from the Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship and UT Austin’s Discovery to Impact will provide insights to consider for faculty who may be interested in engaging in entrepreneurship at Dell Med and would like to understand where to begin. Discussion panelists will explore topics, including:

  • What is commercialization and what can faculty looking to engage more in academic entrepreneurship should consider when contemplating taking on an entrepreneurial project
  • Provide an overview of the current landscape of academic industry commercialization including areas of focus for Dell Med and UT Austin going forward;
  • Opportunities provided by their teams for faculty to learn more about academic entrepreneurship and commercialization;
  • Insights for interested faculty who be unsure where or how to begin

Getting Started with Clinical Trials

  • PI experiences and lessons learned in overseeing and executing a study
  • Insights on establishing a collaborative and functional relationship with your sponsoring entity
  • Overarching administrative and financial nuances of industry sponsored trials
  • Differences in how financial support is procured and structured to support study success
